dorgard

Self closing fire doors are a vital part of the fire defence of a building, they are designed to prevent  not only the spread of fire, but also the toxic gases that can incapacitate and kill in seconds. The down side is that they restrict free movement, especially in premises such as residential care and nursing homes. Unfortunately many people do not understand the importance of fire doors, and it is not unusual to find them held open with anything from wedges to fire extinguishers, a practice that is both dangerous and illegal.

There is an answer to the problem, door detents, or in simple terms 'hold open devices', that can be fitted to doors to hold them open, and release if the fire alarm actuates. These come in all shapes and sizes, some actually hold the door open whilst others allow the door to swing freely and only close when activated. The problem with these is usually the cost, or in many cases a lack of knowledge that such devices exist. They must also work in tandem with the fire alarm, which itself must incorporate automatic fire detection in order to work independently and automatically in case of fire. If hold open devices are not installed during the construction stage, or during refurbishment, they can be expensive as they require to be 'hard wired' to the fire alarm panel.

A more cost effective way is to install 'Dorgards'. These are self contained battery operated devices designed to hold open fire doors safely and effectively. They are easy to fit, just 4 screws hold the Dorgard in position, and its ready for immediate use.

Dorgards work by holding the door open with a plunger, which releases if the fire alarm activates. It will also work with a domestic smoke alarm.

An LED flashing red light indicates that the unit is operational. In the event of low battery power or battery failure Dorgard releases allowing the door to close. In addition to this, the unit sounds a repeated warning and flashes an LED to indicate a low battery. Battery life usually exceeds 12 months.

The unit is powered by 2 x 'C' cell batteries (supplied) and even contains a timer which can be set to automatically release at one of three pre-determined times each night and will not 're-set' until the next morning. Dorgard can also be set to keep the door open continuously.

Dorgard can also be released by lightly kicking the plunger (if a floor plate is NOT in use) or by pushing the door in the open direction.
