How to Choose
& Use a FIRE EXTINGUISHER
This media rich interactive CD-ROM has been designed to
help those responsible for fire safety in organisations to raise
employee awareness of the threat and consequences of fire and to
teach employees how to extinguish small fires safely.
The CD-ROM is split into sections as follows:
-
Fire
Facts - designed to test and increase users' knowledge of the
causes and consequences of fires at work. It uses a rich mix
of still and video images along with simple questions. Trainees'
performance in this section does not contribute to their final
score, but the feedback should make users appreciate the frequency
of fires in the workplace and the ease with which they start and
spread.
-
Action in the Event of Fire - movies , text and
still images take participants through the actions they should take
if they find themselves discovering or being alerted to a fire at
work. The information includes fire safety signs and notices,
raising the alarm, evacuating the premises via escape routes and
gathering at specified assembly points.
-
Facing up to Fire - Useful information about
fire, including a video animation of the fire triangle, and the
various classes of fires they may encounter.
-
Choose Your Weapon - The characteristics of each
of the fire classes are explained. Trainees learn which types of
extinguishing equipment are designed to tackle which types of fires.
Given their specialist and particularly hazardous nature, Class C
(fires involving gases) and Class D (fires involving metals) are
listed but not dealt with here.
Graphics and
detailed video demonstrations with voice over explain the
identification, stability, use and restrictions of water, foam,
carbon dioxide, dry powder and wet chemical extinguishers. In
addition, the use of fire blankets and hose reels is demonstrated
and explained.
-
Life or Death Quiz - Users are required to
answer seven questions selected randomly from a pool. The quiz is
designed so that every participant must answer one question about
each of the featured pieces of extinguishing equipment. The quiz
incorporates a variety of question/response types, including text
recognition, click on a picture, drag & drop, multiple choice and
true/false.

Focus on
Fire Extinguishers
The new fire safety legislation
requires that staff are trained to use fire extinguishers. It is also
important for insurance purposes, an insurer may decline to pay out if
property is destroyed by a fire that no-one has tackled. The environment
also suffers from the effects of fire.
The ability of
staff to be able to use a portable fire extinguisher can reduce
the risk of a small fire growing into a large one.
Focus on
Fire Extinguishers is suitable for both induction and regular
training sessions and features:
